That’s right—my eggo is preggo, i.e. I’m pregnant!!! I’m actually in my 13th week now and our Gummerbaby is due in early May so it’s possible we will have a full house of May birthdays (both Todd and I have birthdays in May as well). The biggest question that pregnant gals get is “how are you feeling?” and while it’s been a much tougher process than I ever imagined so far (helloooo extreme nausea!!) I’m overall feeling grateful and excited. Second biggest question might be, “Do you have any food cravings?” and while my list of food aversions is waaaay longer than any cravings list, my top guilty pleasure is a soft pretzel with nacho cheese for dipping—YUM!! Although to be totally fair, I’ve been talking about fulfiling that food wish for a few weeks before I got pregnant, so that may just be a general craving that tastes extra good at the moment!
I’m definitly one of those people that falls into the “knows absolutely nothing about babies” category so this will be a big learning experience, but thankfully May is still quite a ways off so we still have time to learn and prepare as much as we can for all that next year will bring. Oh, and if you have any thoughts on how to best introduce cats to a new baby, let me know!! Thanks for being excited with us!!

Thanks! It IS cool, but mostly ridiculous and crazy! And yes, that’s what we heard but with our birth center the baby comes home that night if everything goes well so the baby will be in the blanket I guess!

I have heard seting up the nursery and getting the cats accustomed to that room being different, and off limits for a while (no cats in crib situations) and also bringing home a special treat, food, bed or toy, with you through the door to make the arrival of a new person also be the arrival of a special treat for them. I don’t have kiddos, but I do have two cats who freaking love moist food on occasion, it helped them when we had to bring home a dog to dogsit for a while. 🙂

my friends cats were not interested at all when they brought home their baby son. just a jealous look from time to time and claiming cuddly-time as soon as the little one was asleep. now, tha he is 6 months old and starting to crawl, they interact and even cuddle with him. its too sweet. and they feel immediately if he is not fine and lay next to him. those animals are amazing.
i wish you the best time. enjoy every part of it.

Are you exhausted? Im 12 weeks pregnant myself and I absolutely cannot believe how terrible I feel between the nausea and the extreme, crushing fatigue.
And I’m also using a birthing center! There are none in my whole state so I have to drive 45 mins away, which is super lame.
Aw, I’m sorry you are feeling bad too! I don’t have the super extreme fatigue (although I do sleep a lot and take naps!) so I’m at least grateful for that. And I’m glad there’s at least one you can get to! Good luck!

I had my first baby girl last june and at first, my cat was not interested in her at all! She had a bit of jalous behavior though, so check their litterbox because that’s how my cat decided to rebel against the routine changes!
The cat is just begining to have interactions with my daughter, I guess she figured that she’s here to stay so she better make the best of it and she let my girl “cuddle” her when I hold her in my arms. Babies are rough (they looove to grab everything and are damn strong!!!) so I try to show both of them how to be with each other (gentle for my baby, patient for my cat), BEFORE babygirl starts crawling everywhere and chasing the cat’s tail!

Don’t worry about the cats, I did and it was pointless. My cat, Ella, was a little jealous of my baby and slightly wary but is happy to tolerate her 15 months on. My daughter loves the cat and one of her first words was Ella. It’s been a good experience teaching Harper to be gentle with Ella, to use flat hands, keep away from her bottom etc.
I knew nothing about babies and read very little. We’re all just winging it anyway. I felt the more I read, the more I panicked. Trust your instincts and try and stay chilled about it and you’all have a chilled out baby!

Also, if you don’t mind, I’d like to ask a few things about getting pregnant while also having cats around the house. My husband and I are crazy cat people and we have 2(-ish, because we also have stray cats come and go) cats at home. Our parents keep telling us to give the cats up for adoption because cats can cause infertility on humans because of the toxoplasma virus. I’ve done some research (googling, that is) and found out that I need to be tested for the toxo virus first before trying to get pregnant. Did you take such test? I’ve seen people with cats get pregnant and they’re okay. Need some perspectives on this matter to tell my parents and in-laws haha

Yeah, I know that there are people that freak out and get rid of their cats without really knowing much about what is myth and what is true which is sad because it sounds like it’s unnecessary in most cases. I didn’t get tested before getting pregnant, but Todd cleans the litter box when he’s home and I use gloves and wash my hands well when I have to do it. I think it’s a pretty rare thing and there are a million facts that people and websites like to scare people with so you need to see what is actually real. Ask your vet about it or read established reputable sites for information and trust that info over a random thread on a pregnancy site that has a lot of “well my cousin’s friend died once because…” . I think you’ll find if you a follow a few simple rules about cleaning the box often (I’ve read the virus doesn’t show up in feces for 24-48 hours after being expelled), having others clean it when they can, and using gloves (I’ve heard mask too but I haven’t read that rule in many places) and washing hands when you do it, you will most likely be fine. They only get the virus from eating other animals that have it so keep them indoors if you don’t want to risk it and I’ve also read that they can actually only get it once and then they are immune to the virus if they come in contact with it after that. So, ask your vet to be safe but I think they will help you develop a plan that you feel good about that allows you to keep your fur babies around as well. Hope that helps!

Congrats! Babies are wonderful, amazing, exhausting little things. My cat was freaked out by the sudden small loud frequently wailing house guest and actually really weak a few months in. To the point where she would stumble when trying to jump on the bed. She hid underneath the bed barely moving and we were really concerned. But apparently cats take way longer to adjust. We made sure to get her out and spend time loving on her and now, she tolerates my son Galen. He however is obsessed with her. Giving pats and holding her by the tail. Best of luck!

My cats don’t care much about the baby, they only mind that we don’t cuddle or pet them as often as we used to. My advice would be to slowly change habits while the baby hasn’t arrived yet (we started to close our bedroom door months before and they learnt not to spend the night in our bed pretty quickly), so that they don’t see a sudden difference from one day to the next.
About the baby, I’m so not the motherly type, and as I was being operated on I still couldn’t figure out that the baby was a real person.
A few hours later I was so excited every time that I remembered we would get to take him home with us it was almost all worth it all those 21 hours of labor ?

We installed a screen door that we painted on our daughter’s nursery door before she was born to keep our cats out of her room but still have the door open. It was awesome because she’s now almost 3 and we have used it as a door to keep her in her room once she moved from the crib to the big kid bed without having her feel trapped or having to shut the door and stuff. Super weird, everyone that comes to our house comments that they think the door is cute though!
