16 Weeks and Time Is Flying By!

So I am at the 16 week mark this week and finally feeling better (hallelujahthankyoujesus). I’m still on my anti-nausea medicine, but I used to just feel well enough to get by on it (and it was SO much better than before I started taking it) but now I feel about as normal as a preggo can I guess and that’s been a breath of fresh air. I started to back off the medicine since I was feeling better and I think I got a little too cocky and ended up running to the bathroom again so I think I’ll stay on it a bit longer, back off a little more slowly, and see how I do. ANYWAYS, it’s amazing how different life is since I feel human again. Each day used to crawl by and it felt like it took years before I could see the week jump another number in my pregnancy app (been using the What To Expect When You’re Expecting app) but now it goes by so quickly that I can barely remember what week I’m on before it jumps up again. I’m sure being in the holiday season is also part of it—it always feels like this time of year flies by and then January-March takes freaken’ forever. Since I’ve had more energy to start getting lists and registries together I’ve been faced with the overwhelming deluge of baby item choices and I spent most of last week feeling very confused indeed. Thankfully, I’ve gotten some great suggestions from readers and friends and I’m starting to get together some semblance of a plan for most of the items. I figured I’d start with small decisions (think onsies and baby tubs) and work my way up to the expensive stuff (i.e. cribs and strollers). I’ve got a short work week and then it’s off to Todd’s parent’s house for Thanksgiving and some fun time with our Gummernieces (they are the cutest!) so I’m looking forward to reading in the car and some extra naps on the days off. Hope your holiday is a happy one!

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, find a friend who had a baby in the last couple of years and copy what they used! A few years ago I had two friends who were pregnant at the same time. One was very Type A (in a lovable way!) and extremely diligent. She talked to people, read a million reviews, and came up with a great list of what she felt like she needed. Then the other friend basically copied her registry, because why do all that work twice? They’re both wonderful moms and friend number 2 didn’t have to stress over stuff she wasn’t super interested in dealing with. Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes, I’ve already been getting lists from a few mama friends and it’s been helpful so far! Good idea 🙂

You look great! Glad you are starting to feel better! I was wanting to comment a few posts ago on the Ina May books you are reading. She is the best! I did a natural water birth at a birth center and it worked out great for me. I know it doesn’t/isn’t for everyone. But I am really glad when I read about other people who are trying it. Because we just don’t hear enough GOOD birth stories. I heard so many horror stories during my pregnancy, and it can be hard to shut that out of your head. I found that every day, just affirming to myself that my birth was going to go the way that I wanted really helped me. I know that might be silly, but I think it worked. Good luck to you! Here are a few things I have loved this past year with my 1 year old:

I have the exact Aden + Anais swaddlers you linked! They are great and can be used for so many things. Nursing cover, changing station in a pinch, burp towel, sun shade for stroller or car seat, scarf (ha!, but seriously… they are so cute).
The ergo baby carrier is awesome!
A good stroller with actual tires if you are a walker (we are). We got a stroller with tiny wheels and we basically burned them up in the first 3 months walking so much. We switched to a jogging stroller even though we don’t jog and it is awesome!
I also liked the boba wrap for when they are teeny tiny. All they want to do is sleep and be on you, so you can wrap them on yourself and still get some stuff done!
oh, and I love mamanatural.com for great tips and ideas on natural things for baby and mama.
    Cheers!

So glad you found Ina May helpful during your birth! And yes, I’ve heard that jogging stroller suggestion a few times now and I think we will definitely be walkers so that’s good to know! And I’ve been watching a few of mama natural’s videos but I need to get a little deeper into her site. Thanks Amanda!

Hey, I’m very glad to hear you’re feeling better! It is so good to read this as I’m at 10 weeks and cannot wait to eat like a normal person. Nausea 24/7 is so exhausting! I am really curious of what kind of pills are you using since my doctor prescribed me with some dopamine antagonists but basically did not let me take them unless it’s “real bad”, so here I am, suffering, and unsure what’s the level (3 times a day?) that can be called “real bad”…how do you feel about the pills? My pills info sheet says it’s not researched enough on pregnant ladies to be 100% sure they’re safe… Uh, I’m just confused.

Hi Airi! It really is THE WORST! The midwives gave me Diclegis which is a combination of B6 and an antihistamine. It’s been taken in Canada for over 30 years under a different name with (so far) no negative effects linked to it. I just saw recently that this drug was taken off the market here in the US 30 years ago when lawsuits were brought against the company and they couldn’t afford to fight them, but it’s hard to tell if the claims were legitimate (I read some of the main experts for the prosecution side were convicted of testimony fraud on other cases later and the trials they ran didn’t show a link between the drug and claimed birth defects). So, they have still used it in Canada with seemingly good results since that time but I’m still trying to get fully off of it just in case. Not sure what your medicine is, but I would definitely try any and all more natural options you can first if you haven’t already and only resort to medicine as a last resort as for as little time as you can. It’s now your job as a mom to second guess and research everything you can to feel as informed as possible when you decide things (which is SO overwhelming I know). I’m sure as parents not every decision we make will have been perfectly “right” in hindsight, but doing the best you can at the time with the knowledge you have is really all we can do. Hope you are feeling better soon!!

Thank you so much for replying. I will definitely ask my midwife about this pill next time I visit (in 3 days! Yay)! Currently I’m taking oroperidys ( domperidonum) but it doesn’t seem to be working for me at all. I’m sure if it’s been good in Canada for so long, it’s fine. I will try to find out what’s it called in Europe.
My first doctor said there is no cure (or remedy) for hyperemesis gravidarum at all, so I’m really hoping this midwife won’t tell me just to suffer through it and come in for IVs when I get too dehydrated.
I couldn’t agree more that it is extremely overwhelming to get informed about what’s good for the baby and what’s not and then making even the simplest nutrition decisions. I got a miniheartattack the other day finding out that the One tea that I enjoy drinking, the only thing that keeps me hydrated, allegedly can cause miscarriage! Lemongrass! It’s natural! Also, carrots!!! Don’t eat too much carrots coz vitamin A can be bad too. One could go nuts with this sort of information! But I’ve come to conclusion that everything is fine in moderation. And just try to get by! Looking at cute babyonesies helps to keep motivated.
        Take care!

Congratulations on the bebe!!! Glad to hear you are feeling better! I have a 9 month old myself and he is a delight, he actually has the same name as your cat, Charlie. 🙂 I am sure you are going to love motherhood and I can’t wait to share in your journey!

I have to strongly recommend the moms4moms tub. https://www.4moms.com/infant_tub This tub has a clean water reservoir where the water flows first before it goes into the area with the baby. The water is constantly flowing so the dirty water is washed out. The way it flows makes it seemingly impossible for the water to flow too high where it would be unsafe for baby. I received this tub as a hand me down from my sister so Charlie is the 3rd baby to use it and it seems almost brand new still.

Good luck with picking out all the things for bebe!!

The one thing I’m so glad I did before having my daughter was making a bunch of Padsicles. They helped out a lot with the pain that comes after. I’m not sure why in every movie after the water breaks (which doesn’t come out all in one gush) they’re in a rush to the hospital. I took the dog out and stopped for a coffee before I headed to the hospital and she still didn’t come for another 18 hours.
